President’s Newsletter – October

Dear Fellow Congregants,

This is my first message since August. I have tried to make this a monthly event, but there has been a flurry of activity which, quite frankly, I found overwhelming.

The High Holidays were among the most moving experiences we have ever had at CSY. Alfredo, Fernando, and Nelson (our 3 Amigos) created an atmosphere of spirituality and congregational participation that affected all who attended.

Several weeks later, Alfredo opened Sulam Learning Academy which, as we had hoped, has created a higher profile for CSY among the Westchester Jewish Community. The number of people attending who belong to other Congregations has expanded, and we are even attracting people from the City. The classes meet from 7:00 – 9:00 PM on Monday nights through December 3rd.

Last month, Karen Feldman organized a group of about 15 people who attended a tribute to Irving Berlin in New York.

We will be observing our first Kabbalat Shabbat and Hannukah at 6:30 on Friday, December 7. Karen Greene is arranging for a kosher Mexican style extravaganza following services, and, if you plan to attend, please let her know. The cost will be $25 per person.

One closing comment – Sulam has a tradition of maintaining a minyan every week. For the first time in our history, there were two Shabbatot in a row when we did not have enough congregants to say Borchu. Within 15 or 20 minutes, we did get enough people so that we could read the Torah. I urge you, if you plan on attending services, to make every effort to leave home a little earlier so that we can observe a complete service.

We are looking forward to a fulfilling year in the months to come and welcome any ideas you may have as to events which may be of interest to our Congregation.
